In Words and Pictures

February 01, 2015  •  Leave a Comment

I've had a concept in my head for a while that revolves around words and pictures. They both have the capacity to tell stories, just in different ways. Of course, some pictures and words do a better job of it that others. In fact, there are certain words and phrases that are so powerful that they invoke deep rooted emotions in us and almost have the ability to block out a novel by themselves.

My idea is to take one of those emotionally powerful words/phrases and compose a photograph that expresses the same emotion visually. Finally, I want to take that pairing and write a short poem or some prose and see what happens. This is my first attempt at that.

Please let me know what you think and if it might be a project worth pursuing.

War Hero Fetish

(c)Gene Lazo

Like an apparition in chains

knocking on a bedroom door

after midnight

phone call startles nightmares from dreams.

The treasured and villains

transform each other into heroes

who raise Patriotic conceit thru banners half lowered

who make oligarchs richer still

who soak the Potter's fields with blood and tears

whose salt leaves homelands infertile and fallow.
